As of June Paso a Paso has been working in Guatemala for 2 years. We have a special story of how it started and here it is. This update was written by Rolando, the pastor that we partner with in Barrio la Cruz. I asked him to share his story with us of how he we met and how he started working with us. I have translated it and his letter is in spanish at the end.
My name is Cesar Rolando Garcia Alvarez. I was born October 16, 1969 in the Neighborhood of Barrio la Cruz of the municipality of Pastores in the department of Sacatepequez in the beautiful country of Guatemala. At the age of 24 by the will of God and in a way inexplicable for the medical science my two eyes were affected and remain blind, that happened on June 9, 1991. From that date to October 11 of 1991 I was submitted to 13 operations but all were in vain. Being blind God called me to serve in the area of teaching and working with children. I started working with children in 1993 till the present. Presently I am teaching young children with a group of 5 families in different homes, preaching in a area called Sacatecas, collaborating with the digital accompaniment (Rolando’s music, he sings and plays a guitar through the streets) with the group of women of the Church, visiting the sick and doing some other works that arise inside the Church.
How was the idea born to seek aid for children of scarce resources?
It was in September of the year 2005 upon listening the history of a girl whose mother could not buy her something that she needed, I felt in my heart first sadness not being able to help her and second I felt on behalf of God a challenge to see what we could do with so many children in need. And it was then I began to pray fervently to God to open doors and obtain aid, that it would rain down. After 9 months of praying, the answer from God arrived the exact day in which I became blind 15 years earlier, June 9, 2006. When to my barrio God sent my darling Stephanie, I shared the desire that there was in my heart and she shared the same and she was prompted by the love of God to help and told me that she was willing to support the ministry and desire of my heart.
Immediately we begin to work and on January 31, 2007 we delivered the first 97 packages of school supplies including a Bible and a pair of shoes for each of the children in the program we developed. In addition the students that pay monthly to attend school Paso a Paso paid some fees up to 100% and other up to 50% . On November 17 2007, we distributed clothes to some neighbors in Barrio la Cruz. Later 115 packages of school supplies were given to each child for the 2008 school year and fees paid for the children in the program. This is how Paso a Paso started with Guatemala.
This is Rolando’s brief story and history with us and Paso a Paso. The role he has is vital and we couldn’t make it without him. He is our hardest working person we have there and we are blessed to have him. He loves every one of these children and loves them and knows each one by name. Rolando has used what most would consider to be a debilitating factor to change the lives of numerous children. We have focused our time and heart on the children of Barrio la Cruz, we hope to reach those most oppressed, needy and uneducated giving them a chance to have a brighter future.
